Q: What software do I need to view the cave web site? What browser should I be using? How can I get the software?

A: This site has been tested on Windows 95 with Netscape Navigator 4.05 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and on a Power Macintosh with Netscape Navigator 4.05. The site also requires the following plug-ins: Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Shockwave, Quicktime Plug-In 2.0. All software is available for free download from their respective companies.

Q: How do I configure the Quicktime Plug-In?

A: The Quicktime Plug-In 2.0 (included when installing Quicktime 3.0) allows you to set the speed of your Internet connection so the browser can automatically download an appropriate sized movie based on your connection speed. For information on setting your connection, please refer to Apple Computer's Quicktime Information - http://www.apple.com/quicktime or go here to go to the configuration page directly - http://www.apple.com/quicktime/information/plugin.html

Q: I get an error message saying I need to download a newer plug-in. What should I do?

A: Your machine either doesn't have or has an outdated version of a plug-in. For the best experience, you will need to download a new version before continuing. Click on the link provided to download the newest version.

Q: How can I speed up my web browser?

A: The speed that you view pages depends on several factors: the speed of your modem, the speed of your server connection, the speed of your computer's processor, and how many other people are on the Internet at the same time. Some suggestions for speeding up performance are:

Close all other open programs

Use the web at less popular times (weekends and nights)

Increase your browser's memory allocation (RAM)

Clear your disk and memory caches

Decrease your browser's verification frequency to verify once per session

Disable Java if not needed

Upgrade your browser version. Newer versions are faster than older versions

Q: When I start, I get an message telling me to enable Javascipt. How do I do that?

A: If you are using Netscape Navigator, open your Preferences (Edit -> Preferences), select 'Advanced' and check the 'Javascript Enabled' option.

Q: When I start, I get a message saying my computer and/or browser can't access the cave web site because certain Web technology isn't available for it. What's up with that?

A: This site relies on the use of plug-ins to deliver the best experience. While these plug-ins are widely available for a wide range of computers, they are not available for every system configuration. At this time, the Macintosh version of Internet Explorer is not supported.

Q: My machine doesn't meet the minimum requirements. Is there a way to access some of the files on the site?

A: Yes. Quicktime VR files that are compatible with QTVR 1.0 (for Windows 3.1 users) are available for download. You can also view Whitfield School Water Quality Data at this location.

Q: And those messages saying my browser is running out of memory? Eh?

A: These sometimes appear when viewing different web pages (that usually contain plug-in information) after an extended period of time. Quit your browser and relaunch your browser to free up memory. On a Macintosh, you may also want to increase the Preferred Memory Size of your browser by locating your browser and selecting File -> Get Info.

Q: Where were the QTVR's photographed at?

A: The Quicktime VR's for the Cave Composition section were shot at Onondaga Cave State Park. You can reach the cave at:
